5 Federal Employees Indicted In School Lunch Scheme In Md.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (WJZ)--Five federal employees have been indicted in a school lunch theft scheme in Maryland. One of the accused sits on the board of education, according to the Prince George's County State's Attorney Office.
Prosecutors say they all illegally got reduced priced school lunches for their children.
WJZ's Mary Bubala has the latest on the investigation.
Parents say they are extremely disappointed in Lynn Mundey, the board of education member representing their schools in their neighborhood.
She was indicted for allegedly lying about her income so her children could get reduced priced lunches at the schools they attend in Prince George's County.
The State's Attorney says Mundey and the others drained more than $13,000 from the program over the course of 4 years.
Now they are facing multiple charges including fraud and theft. Mundey and the others are all federal employees at the U.S. Government
Accountability office.
"These indictments send a clear message that stealing federal funds intended for the poor, or for anyone else, will simply not be tolerated," GAO Inspector General Adam Trzeciak told WUSA9.
Mundey is set to step down from her position on the school board at the end of this month but now some are wondering if it should happen sooner.
The state's attorney also say some claimed to not just have a low income, but no income at all, even though they were working full time for the government.
