3 Patients at Psychiatric Program Arrested After Disturbance

SYKESVILLE, Md. (AP) — Three patients at a state psychiatric program in Sykesville have been arrested following a disturbance at the facility.

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said in a news release that the patients have been charged with assault, disorderly conduct, destruction of property and resisting arrest.

Facility staffers secured themselves in a room after the disturbance started at the Secure Evaluation Therapeutic Treatment program at the Springfield Hospital Center late Wednesday.

After authorities responded early Thursday, staffers and officers developed a response plan to resolve the issue. Around 4:30 a.m., state police tactical troopers entered the building and many of the patients eventually returned to their rooms.

It's unclear what started the disturbance.
