2007 Shooting Victim Dies From Injuries; Charges Could Be Upgraded

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Police say a man shot back in 2007 died earlier this year from injuries he sustained during that shooting, and more charges could be coming for the man convicted in that shooting.

The Baltimore Police Department reports Derrell Smith was shot back on August 6, 2007. He was taken to a local hospital to be treated.

Weeks later, Aaron Speaks was arrested for the shooting.

In 2008, Speaks was found guilty of shooting Smith. He was convicted of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and handgun-related charges.

On February 2, 2017, Smith died from his injuries. Following an autopsy of Smith's body, the Medical Examiner's Office determine he died from complications from that 2007 shooting.

Authorities are working to determine if additional charges will be filed against Speaks.
