2 Sanitary Sewer Overflows Reported

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- With last night's heavy rains, two sewer overflows were reported, according to Baltimore Public Works.

One occurred in the 1700 block of E. Chase Street around 8:20 p.m. and stopped around 2 a.m.

Officials believe 114,000 gallons of wastewater was released into the harbor.

The second incident was at Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Facility in Wagner's Point. Rain got into the sewer lines causing a brief outage. Approximately 50,000 gallons of partially-treated wastewater entered the Patapsco River at that location.

Residents are reminded not to swim or wade in urban waterways.

The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Baltimore City Health Department have been notified of these events.

"Baltimore City is in the construction phase of a $1 Billion Consent Decree Program to rehabilitate our sewer infrastructure which will help to reduce sewer overflows. At this time over $100,000,000 in sewer rehabilitation projects are occurring throughout the City," officials noted.
