2 Prince George's Moms Lobby For Bilingual Schools

BOWIE, Md. (AP) -- A quest by two Prince George's County mothers to lobby the county school system to begin offering Spanish immersion classes for elementary students is starting to pay off.

The Washington Post reports Delores Millhouse of Bowie and Gina Bowler of Upper Marlboro have spent months pressing county leaders to add a Spanish immersion program to its offerings. They would visit schools, make phone calls on lunch breaks and corner education officials after late-night board meetings.

Now schools chief Kevin Maxwell has recommended a Spanish immersion at three schools next year, and the school board has agreed.

Christian Rhodes, the education adviser to County Executive Rushern Baker, says the two moms were the kind of tenacious advocates the county needs in terms of parent engagement.
