2 Men Charged In JHU Off-Campus Rape

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- New details emerge in a rape at a Johns Hopkins University frat house. Police have arrested two men who they say sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl at a fraternity party.

Rick Ritter has more on the suspects.

Neither the victim nor suspects are students at the university. Charging documents we obtained say the 16-year-old girl was in a bathroom at the fraternity house when two men forced her to engage in multiple sexual acts.

Some of the details are extremely graphic.

From the outside, it's a typical fraternity house at Johns Hopkins. Inside, it's the scene of a rape that left a 16-year-old girl scarred for life.

"It's absolutely sickening; that should never happen," said Allie Haight, who lives in the area.

Police arrested 19-year-old Ethan Turner and 20-year-old Chaz Haggins for the rape.

"To have this happen is just rather horrifying," said freshman Dorothy Chen.

On November 2, authorities responded to the SAE frat house along the 29-hundred block of St. Paul Street. Investigators say the 16-year-old victim was inside a bathroom while at a party. Charging documents say the suspects barged in one at a time and forced the girl to engage in oral sex before forcing her to have sexual intercourse.

Documents say one of the suspects then grabbed her by the head and forced her to perform oral sex yet again.

"We know the rules: no means no," Haight said. "Especially to hear she was so young...it's disgusting."

WJZ tried reaching out to Johns Hopkins University for an interview but they only released a short statement saying, in part, "Johns Hopkins is pleased to learn there have been arrests in this case. The victim continues to be in the hearts and minds of our university community."

On Wednesday, members of the fraternity declined to comment but students say it's been the talk of the campus.

"We were all pretty freaked out because we heard it was a 16-year-old girl," said freshman Thaddeus Woodard.

As the university continues to crack down on all university parties.

"They've become really exclusive so you have to already be a part of a fraternity and they have a list of people," said freshman Colette Aroh.

"It really just puts a damper on our experience," Woodard said.

JHU started its own investigation into the alleged rape. Since then, the SAE fraternity has been placed on suspension.

The suspects are both full-time offenders and are being held without bond at the Baltimore City jail. They are both charged with first and second degree rape in addition to multiple sex offense and assault charges.
