2 Md. Firefighters Honored At National Ceremony

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) -- Two Maryland firefighters were honored at a national memorial ceremony for fallen firefighters in Emmitsburg.

Perryville Fire Capt. David Barr Jr. and Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Co. firefighter Gene Kirchner were honored on Sunday during the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.

Barr died in 2013 after he was hit by a car while working the scene of an accident in Perryville. Kirchner died in May after suffering critical injuries in a fire in Reisterstown.

U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer delivered the keynote address. Among the 107 firefighters honored were 19 Arizona firefighters killed in a 2013 canyon fire and 10 first responders killed in a fertilizer plant explosion in Central Texas last year. Ninety-eight of the firefighters honored died in the line of duty in 2013. Nine died in previous years.
