2 Indicted In 2013 Slaying Of Md. Inmate

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A Washington County grand jury has indicted two inmates in the slaying of another prisoner at the medium-security Maryland Correctional Institution near Hagerstown.

The state's attorney's office said Friday that 20-year-old Andre Washington is charged with first-degree murder and other offenses in the stabbing death of 22-year-old Deavel Johnson.

Twenty-four-year-old James Valentine is charged with being an accessory after the fact.

Neither defendant has an attorney listed in online case records.

Johnson died in March 2013 after collapsing in an open dormitory area that sleeps as many 64 inmates. He had been serving a four-year sentence for a Howard County burglary conviction.

Washington was sentenced in 2012 to eight years for a Washington County drug conviction.

Valentine was sentenced in 2012 to four years for an assault in Harford County.
