2 Homes Evacuated, Road Closed After Wall Collapse

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County officials say two Gaithersburg homes were evacuated and a nearby road is closed after a retaining wall collapsed amid a weekend of heavy rain.

Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer says the homes near the wall were evacuated as a precaution Sunday since the ground under the wall was saturated and may be shifting. Three people left the two homes on Ridge Point Place in the Kentlands development, but no injuries were reported.

After the wall gave way, utility crews were called to the scene to check on the homes' utilities.

Police say nearby Quince Orchard Road between Darnestown Road and Pawnee Drive could be closed for days.
