112 Fallen Firefighters Honored at Maryland Memorial Service

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) — The U.S. Fire Service is adding 112 names to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

The solemn ceremony Sunday caps a weekend of events supporting the families of 79 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2015, and 33 who died in previous years.

They include 22 New York City firefighters who died from illnesses linked to the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center. Federal rules governing public safety officer benefits were changed this year to include those who died from Sept. 11-related illnesses.

The fallen also include three U.S. Agriculture Department firefighters who died while battling a wildfire near Twisp, Washington, in August.
