100 Yr. Time Capsule Recently Discovered Is On Display

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ)—The 100-year-old time capsule recently discovered at Baltimore's Washington Monument will be exhibited at the Walters Art Museum until it is opened in late May.

Since January 2014, the Monument has been undergoing a $5.5 million restoration project. Back in October 2014, the time capsule was discovered in the mall of the Monument. Officials say the time capsule was placed behind the wall to commemorate the Monument's 100 anniversary, and then it was forgotten.

"After taking an x-ray of the box and receiving the results, we are confident the contents are in good condition," said Terry Drayman-Weisser, Dorothy Wagner Wallis Director of Conservation & Technical Research at the Walters Art Museum.  "We hope that everyone will come to see the time capsule at the Walters before it is opened later this spring."

There are plans for the capsule to be opened closer to the Monument's bicentennial, during the Monument's re-dedication ceremony scheduled for July 4, 2015.

After the ceremony, the contents will then go on display at the Maryland Historical Society.

The July 4th event is opened to the public and is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m..
