Teenage girl shot by DeKalb County officer investigating reports of armed person at apartments, police say

A teenage girl is recovering in the hospital after officials say a DeKalb County police officer shot her while responding to a call at an apartment complex.

Officials say the shooting happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Reserve at Stone Hill on the 2000 block of Treehills Parkway.

According to investigators, officers responded to a report of a person armed with a gun at the complex and "encountered two armed subjects." The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reports that the two people were a teenage boy and a girl.

The GBI said that, while one officer took a gun from the boy, another officer noticed a gun in the girl's waistband and told her to drop the weapon.

"The girl reached for the gun and began to draw it from her waistband," the GBI said. "The officer fired their weapon, hitting the teenage girl."

Medics took the girl to the hospital for treatment. She is expected to recover from her injuries.

Police say the boy was taken into custody. He remains in detention at the DeKalb Regional Youth Detention Center. Officials have not released the identity of either teenager.

This is the second shooting connected with metro Atlanta law enforcement on Tuesday. Hours before, a Sandy Springs police officer was grazed by a bullet while investigating reports of gunshots.

The GBI is working on an investigation into the shooting. Once finished, the case will be sent to the DeKalb County District Attorney's office for review.
