Florida Panhandle officials emphasizing safety ahead of spring break for metro Atlanta students
Schools across metro Atlanta will be on spring break next week, and officials at a hot spot destination want everyone to stay safe.
Many Georgians plan to hit the road to the Florida Panhandle, especially to the spots on the 30A coastal highway.
David Vaughan, the beach safety director for the South Walton Fire District, said this upcoming week will be one of their busiest.
Vaughan wants people to keep several safety tips in mind, including knowing where they are on the beach.
"Having a landmark and a name and even better a specific address is going to be the first thing that comes in handy when the emergency strikes and you need to get the help to you," Vaughan said.
Vaughan also encourages people to be mindful of the beach flag conditions.
When double red flags are flying, the Gulf is closed to the public.
"Understand that the Gulf is a dynamic body of water that can change, and the conditions can deteriorate rapidly," Vaughan said. "So, having respect for the open water environment is the first real bit of advice that I can give people. So never swim alone. Swim near a lifeguard."
Vaughan said they are fully prepared and staffed to patrol the beaches this week, with 25 to 30 lifeguards patrolling the beaches daily.
