Officer shoots armed woman during confrontation at Cobb County Police headquarters, officials say

A confrontation at the Cobb County Police Department's headquarters has ended with an officer shooting an armed woman on Wednesday.

Officials with the police department tell CBS News Atlanta that the shooting happened around 4 p.m. at their headquarters on S. Fairground Street.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, 26-year-old Rebekah Patterson entered the building and asked to speak with an officer. An officer met Patterson outside and began talking with her.

At some point during the conversation, investigators say Patterson pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officer. After she reportedly didn't follow the officer's commands to drop the gun, the officer fired, hitting Patterson multiple times.

Officers inside the building quickly rendered aid, and the woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. She remains in critical condition.

The department has asked the GBI to look into the shooting. Once the investigation is finished, the case will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney's Office for review.
