World War III? Not Today

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

And we're happy to report that World War Three has been delayed until Iran actually starts to develop nuclear weapons.

I know I shouldn't be making a joke about this but the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency has been saying Iran has been out of the nuke business for year. So who was surprised exactly by the brand new National Intelligence Estimate? The White House, I guess, and all the other saber rattlers who think bellicose language and military action is the way to wage foreign policy.

Perhaps we're lucky the War in Iraq has dragged on so long. Otherwise, the military might have been in position to fight another war and had they been ready, perhaps the U.S. would have been willing to attack only to find out "Whoops! Just like the last time."

No WMD's in Iraq and now no nukes in Iran. Yes, Ahmadinejad is a wack job. Yes, Iran is a very bad actor on the world stage. But world wars should be used sparingly. Perhaps now we can hold off a bit.
