Super Mario: 'I won't be back'

Mario Lemieux, who is threatening to sue Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Roger Marino for deferred salary still owed him, says he has no hard feelings and won't play for any other team.

Lemieux laughed off published reports in Canada that he might end his one-year retirement.

At least two Canadian newspapers suggested last week that any lawsuit would be a ruse to free him from his ties to the Penguins, allowing him to sign a rich contract elsewhere.

"Nope, no chance," Lemieux said while attending the Pittsburgh Senior Classic. "I played for one team my entire career. That's what I wanted.

"Things are good now (in retirement). It's great. I love it. It's a different life, but I like it."

The Penguins still owe Lemieux about $24 million in deferred compensation under the $42 million contract he signed in 1992. The team reportedly paid him about $3 million this season, but are believed to be overdue on a $5 million installment.

"I just want what's owed to me," Lemieux said.

Tom Reich, Lemieux's agent, said the contract falls under the collective bargaining agreement between NHL owners and players and Lemieux must be paid.

Lemieux said he barely watched hockey during his first full season of retirement, estimating he saw only about two or three games, one on the night his No. 66 was retired.

He spent most of the winter playing golf in Florida.

"I've watched a couple of periods here and there, but never a whole game," Lemieux told the Beaver County (Pa.) Times. "The game is too slow. It's not very exciting with the trapping."

Lemieux has been outspoken in his opposition to the clutch-and-grab tactics and neutral zone trapping that have robbed the game of much of its tempo and scoring.

"They have to make the ice bigger and open up the game a little bit and let the players play," he said.
