"Spring Awakening" Leads Lortels

"Spring Awakening," the Duncan Sheik-Steven Sater rock musical about adolescent longing, has received six Lucille Lortel nominations, more than any other show.

Among its nominations for best of the current off-Broadway season were nods for its director, Michael Mayer, and for its choreographer, Bill T. Jones. The show, which opened off-Broadway last June, transferred to Broadway in December.

"Stuff Happens," David Hare's look at the run-up to the Iraq war, was nominated for best play and four other awards. It will compete against "The Busy World Is Hushed" by Keith Bunin, "Dying City" by Christopher Shinn and "Indian Blood" by A.R. Gurney.

Besides "Spring Awakening," the best-musical nominees were "In the Heights," "Striking 12" and "Gutenberg! The Musical!"

The Lortel winners will be announced May 7 at New World Stages.
