Victim dies after several shot in San Diego; suspect killed by police

A man was shot dead by police after he opened fire in a pool area of an apartment complex in the San Diego neighborhood of University City on Sunday evening, reports CBS San Diego affiliate KFMB-TV. One of his victims later died and several were in critical condition

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told reporters the department started receiving numerous calls shortly after 6 p.m. about an active shooter.

Zimmerman said a police helicopter witnessed the suspect reloading his weapon before engaging with authorities.

The suspect was identified as Peter Selis. He was described earlier as a white male wearing brown shorts and was armed with a gun. Police say he pointed it at officers, which is when three officers fatally shot him.

"Our thoughts and prayers -- and hearts go out to all the victims and their families and to anyone who witnessed this tragic event," Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman said eight victims suffered gunshot wounds and several are in critical condition at local hospitals. One later succumbed to her wounds.

A witness described the frightening ordeal to KFMB:

"My fiancée and I heard people yelling from my apartment, and screaming. She's a nurse, we came downstairs to see what was going on. We saw three people laying on the ground, shot. As we asked if we could help, we heard more gunshots and ran up into our club house. From our clubhouse, we could see the pool area where the suspect was sitting, drinking a beer with one hand, with his gun out in the other."

The incident took place at the La Jolla Crossroads apartments, KFMB reports, and a motive remains unclear.

The identity of the suspect and victims haven't been released.
