Katie Couric's Notebook: McDonald's

Before they were rich and famous they all worked at McDonald's.

It's clear the government has yet to find the special sauce to solve all of the nation's economic woes - but at least the grill is getting hot. The Labor Department reported today that unemployment rates fell in 34 states - a sure sign that Americans are getting back to work.

So, what does all this have to do with the golden arches? Well, Mickey D's is hiring up to 50,000 people today.

It might not be the right job for everyone - but it's a real job for someone. Slate reports that 75 percent of all McDonald's managers and many executives started behind the counter. Not too shabby.

And 50 thousand more people with a paycheck in their pockets? I'm lovin' it.
