Crash Kills Screen Star Bannen

Ian Bannen, an Oscar-nominated British actor who charmed movie audiences playing an affable Irish con artist in Waking Ned Devine, died Wednesday in a car crash in Scotland. He was 71.

Bannen's body was found on the passenger side of an overturned car. The driver — a woman — survived, and is hospitalized. She has not been identified.

In Waking Ned Devine, Bannen played Jackie O'Shea — one of two men who plot to cash in a winning lottery ticket after the owner of the ticket dies from shock upon realizing he'd won.

Bannen got an Oscar nomination in 1965 for his work in The Flight of the Phoenix. His other movies include Braveheart, Hope and Glory, Gorky Park, Eye of the Needle, and Bite the Bullet.
