Another Perry backer reportedly bashes Romney's Mormonism

Another Rick Perry supporter has reportedly attacked the Mormon faith of rival Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The Daily Beast reported Sunday that David Lane, the chief fundraiser for well-publicized Christian prayer rally that Perry headlined in August, told Christian talk radio host Dick Bott in an e-mail that "juxtaposing traditional Christianity to the false God of Mormonism is very important," according to emails obtained by the Beast.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner told CBS News that the comments have "nothing to do with the campaign."

Asked if Perry believes Romney's religion should be an issue in the campaign, Miner answered with an unequivocal "No." He also denied that Perry's campaign is seeking to make it one.

According to the Daily Beast, Lane and Bott had exchanged emails discussing an upcoming interview Bott was planning Robert Jeffress, the Baptist minister who earlier this month told reporters at an gathering of religious activists that Mormonism is "a cult," "not Christian," and an obstacle to Romney winning the presidency.

In an email, Bott reportedly told Lane that Jeffress wasn't necessarily wrong in those comments. The Daily Beast report quoted an email from Lane thanking the radio host and suggesting that Perry's supporters owe Jeffress "a big thank you" for bringing forward the issue of Romney's religion.

On Sunday night, CBS News and RealClearPolitics' Scott Conroy reports, Lane sent a separate email claiming spiritual guidance provided by Romney and detailed in a New York Times report was "not Christian."
