RESUME: Began his retailing career in 1972, working for Richway, the discount department store of Rich's. That retailer was later bought by Federated Department Stores, which is now Macy's Inc. Duke spent 23 years working in retailing with Federated as well as May Department Stores.

Duke joined Wal-Mart in 1995 as senior vice president of distribution, and then switched to logistics in October that year. In March 1997, he became executive vice president of logistics. He was promoted to executive vice president and chief administrative officer in July 2000. In April 2003, Duke was named executive vice president and president and CEO of Wal-Mart's U.S. store division, and became vice chairman and president and CEO of Wal-Mart's international division in October 2005. In February 2009, he became president and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
