2 Killed In Texas School Bus Crash

A bus rolled onto its side Wednesday while trying to avoid cargo that had fallen from a tractor-trailer, killing two members of a high school soccer team, authorities said.

About 20 others were injured when the bus toppled over and swerved into a ditch on Highway 90, about three miles east of Devers, authorities said.

The crash occurred as the bus driver was trying to steer around plastic foam insulation that had spilled from a tractor-trailer.

"The driver attempted to miss the debris that was in the roadway and with the wet conditions, just lost control of the vehicle," a state trooper said.

Investigators said the driver of the truck didn't even know he caused the crash, until he was told. Both he and the bus driver were checked for drugs and alcohol.

The team from West Brook High School in Beaumont was traveling to a playoff game.

The crash killed Ashley Brown and Alicia Bonura, who were traveling with 20 other students, one chaperone and a bus driver.

Two of the injured girls had been trapped in the vehicle and had to be pried from the wreckage, Trooper Richard Vasser said.

The bus driver was taken to the hospital by the owner of the company, Beaumont-based Sun Travel Limousine, officials said.

News of the tragedy spread quickly, reports CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella. Within a half hour of the crash, friends were posting messages on Bonura's MySpace site, asking, "Are you OK?"

A flood of goodbye messages soon followed to the 18-year-old high school senior.

One student wrote, "You were the last person I talked to today at school. I wish I had just one more chance to hug you."

Devers is about 60 miles northeast of Houston.
