Obama: "Appalled And Outraged" At Iran Violence

(AP Photo/Ron Edmonds)
President Obama addressed the continued political dissension in Iran at a White House news conference Tuesday, saying the country and international community were "appalled and outraged" by the violence and threats against protesters.

"I strongly condemn these unjust actions, and I join with the American people in mourning each and every innocent life that is lost," Mr. Obama said from the White House briefing room.

The president also brushed aside criticism from Republicans in Congress that his response hasn't been tough enough, saying that "they've got their constitutional duties, and I'm sure they will carry them out in the way that they think is appropriate. I'm president of the United States, and I'll carry out my duties as I think are appropriate."

Mr. Obama said Iran's accusations against the U.S. and other Western governments of meddling in their internal affairs were "patently false" and called the claims part of a "tired strategy" of scapegoating other nations.

"This is not about the United States and the West; this is about the people of Iran, and the future that they – and only they – will choose."

Mr. Obama said the protesters had shown a "timeless dignity" in demonstrating against what they perceived as illegitimate election results.

"Those who stand up for justice are always on the right side of history," he said.

President Obama also mentioned the now-famous video showing the death of 26-year-old Neda Agha-Soltan, who has become an icon of Iran's opposition movement.

"It's heartbreaking. And anybody who sees it knows that there is something fundamentally unjust about that."

CBS News White House correspondent Chip Reid asked Mr. Obama if comments from Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) that his response was "timid and weak" prompted him to take a more forceful tact today.

Mr. Obama said "all of us share a belief that we want justice to prevail" but he had weigh other presidential duties.

"I've got responsibilities in making certain that we are continually advancing our national security interests and that we are not used as a tool to be exploited by other countries."

When asked by Fox News correspondent Major Garrett "what took so long" to use stronger language, Mr. Obama insisted his stance has been consistent.

"As soon as violence broke out -- in fact, in anticipation of potential violence -- we were very clear in saying that violence was unacceptable, that that was not how governments operate with respect to their people."

"My role has been to say the United States is not going to be a foil for the Iranian government to try to blame what's happening on the streets of Tehran on the CIA or on the White House, that this is an issue that is led by and given voice to the frustrations of the Iranian people," the president continued.

At the center of the upheaval is Iran's disputed June 12 presidential election, which opposition supporters claim gave an illegitimate victory to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Supporters of reformist Mir Hossein Mousavi have since staged several demonstrations that have resulted in the deaths of at least 17 protesters at the hands of security forces.

On Tuesday, Iran's Guardian Council, the top electoral authority, said the results would not be annulled.

President Obama should:

(1) Stop lying
(2) Grow a pair
(3) Take a stand and stick to it
(4) Start backing Israel instead of moonwalking away
(5) Act like the Christian he claims to be
(6) Take this quarter and go buy a spine
(7) Get jaw reconstructive surgery for Michelle
(8) Give straight answers
(9) Have one side of his mouth taped, so he can stop talking out of both sides simultaneously

It seems President Obama is no longer getting the sloppy lovefest treatment by the media, and it's not just about Fox.

ABC and NBC reporters shot him some straight questions about Iran and health care etc.

President Obama resorted to sarcasm, a joke that fell flat.

Everything but a straight answer!

Very interesting, but demostrates the length to which Republicans will go to throw a smoke screen over the devastation they have caused under their leadership. I hope you will open your eyes so you can see more clearly. I used to be a Republican. I even voted for Nixon and Reagan. No more. No more No more ----

We mourn each and every?....I don't think so. In a revolution those who want change, those who have chosen to give their lives do so for the good of the revolt. No, we should not get involved. As others have said...THEY DESPISE US...

So what about the unborn who are killed, MURDERED just as they leave the womb? I mourn for the murdered babies. HE DOES NOT!

This was too late to be perceived as sincere OR believable!

He should have stuck with his previous comment and been done with it!

This is what you get when you listen to staff who try to get you to "pander" to the far right-wing wackos!

Now, neither they or his supporters will believe him concerning this issue!

Mr. Obama doesn't seem to understand that nothing he does is going to please the extremist 19% who don't support him, but in the process of
trying he'll lose his supporters or neutral observers!

OUR PRIMARY CONCERN IS WITH OUR OWN NATION...LET ME MAKE IT CLEAR ONCE MORE!!! THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF VOTER FRAUD...SO THE AMERICAN PRESS IS THEREFORE DOING WHAT? TRYING ONCE AGAIN TO UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE CHOICE OF A PEOPLE? WHATS THE MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE? YOU THINK THIS IS WHAT MADE OUR NATION GREAT? YOU THINK THIS IS HOW WE WON THOSE TWO WARS? BY BEING LITTLE B THAT KNEW NOTHING ELSE BUT TO INSINUATE EVIL, AND CORRUPT EVERYTHING WE TOUCHED? THE UNITED STATES WAS AT ITS GREATEST WHEN IT MINDED ITS OWN BUSINESS UNTIL SUCH TIME AS IT WAS CALLED TO SERVE, AND THE IT DID WHAT IT HAD TO....WHAT WE ARE DOING NOW IS NOTHING BUT THE EPITOME OF COWARDICE AND PETTY SPITE!!!! WHERE HAVE THE IRANIANS FAILED? I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM JIMMY CARTER...IF THERE WERE VOTER FRAUD THEN LETS HEAR IT FROM HIM!!!! I WOULD LISTEN TO HIM, I WILL NOT LISTEN TO SUZANE MALVEUX OR DISGRUNTLED REPUBLICANS OR THE BIASED MEDIA....SHOW US WHERE THE IRANIANS FAILED TO UPHOLD THE DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLE AND WE CAN LISTEN BUT IF YOU CANT THAT...THEN YOU SHOULD SHUT UP BECAUSE YOU ARE THEN ATTEMPTNG TO COERCE THE SITUATION TO YOUR OWN PRIVATE ADVANTAGE AT A TIME WHEN THE AMERICAN PEOPLE NEED UNITY AND HONESTY ABOVE ALL ELSE.

Once again Obama is jumping on the opportunity to prove
an I.Q. advantage over Bush,,,

George Bush in reacting to a situation that would to him
be shocking, dropping a full bottle of Jack Daniels, he
could only be "appalled" or could only be "outraged" but
couldn't quite handle being both at the same time,,,

And which ever came first, say Bush was appalled first,
that would be it, he'd have to stay the course,,,

At which point Bush would call the press conference:,,

"Ladies and Gentleman,,,I presume, heh heh,,,

I,,, AM,,, APPALLED!!,,,,,Thank you and good day,,,,

No!,,,no questions, Dave,,,please,,"

Pure horse manure. Iran would be our ally the way the Arabia is our ally: a dictatorship running on nationalized Anglo-American oil, and supplier of the 9/11 highjackers.
_______

"the Arabia"?

And how many of the 9/11 hijackers were Iranian?

Some of y'all are just dumb when it comes to geography and history.

Obama is and has been responding appropriately to the Iranian situation.

Contrary to what some believe, he is on record as having said from the beginning that the democratic voice of the Iranian people should be acknowledged and validated by the Iranian government.

At first, he kept his response low-key precisely to avoid an anti-American backlash of propaganda by the mullahs.

However, as time has gone by and the violent response against the Iranian people by their own government has been made obvious (i.e., they can no longer pretend that it is not happening--"Neda", anyone?) Obama has chosen the right moment to step up his criticism against the Iranian government. In this way, no one can say that he does not have a legitimate criticism and is only criticizing in order to "interfere" with internal Iranian politics.

The "leader of the free world" is not the "leader of the world " and can't interfere haphazardly in the politics of a sovereign nation without cause.

If only we has learned that lesson in Iran 55 years ago when we helped to depose a democratically-elected leader and reinstated the Shah. Iran would probably be our ally at this point if we had kept our noses out of their business back in 1953,

I recall seeing pictures similar to the Neda video, 39 years ago. Remember Kent State? I don't suppose any of you Repukes do... Of course what happened in Iran is reprehensible, but all this pontificating needs some perspective.

As for North Korea the president should say stop the missile threats or we are going to sink the ship we are currently tracking on our radars. If that does not work then we will destroy your launch pads that we have on satelite photo. The only way to get through to the NK dictator is not by talking tough with words but also by acting tough and carrying out what you say you are going to do.

Yep, all stick, no carrot. Zero to bludgeon inless tan 60 seconds. Screw the State Dept and the diplomatic corps. Let's enlist them in the military and march freedom into every state that doesn't have our brand of democracy. Let's start with the big dogs first. China anyone?

wdh3007 in a very seriously uninformed conservative, that believes that we have unlimited military supplies, personnel, and most importantly FUNDING, for an unlimited number of conflicts, against an unlimited number of opponents, and worst of all - believes that military action is the solution for EVERY problem.

If it wasn't so sad and pathetic, I would literally be terrified out of my mind of people like him.

He as the leader of the free world should say to Iran we congradulate you and support you and would be willing to stand ready diplomatically to assist you in any way we can. You as a nation have the right as people to choose your own form of government leaders and if democracy and freedom is what you choose then the U.S. fully supports your decision. Although your quest & fight for freedom will be a hard journey the price of Liberty, Freedom and Justice will be your reward to finally becoming a nation that the outside world will accept, welcome and do business with. That would be a start but we hear none of this only that the world is watching.

Okay, first off, who exactly are we congratulating? The protesters? They haven't WON anything yet. Your second statement about supporting them dipomatically is naive as the only thing to change would be the ELECTED representative of that country. We would still have to deal with the theocracy. 'Although your quest & fight for freedom will be a hard journey the price of Liberty, Freedom and Justice will be your reward...' Now you're putting the cart before the horse. At least you realize this revolution isn't going to resolve itself overnight. And might I remind you, the youth of Iran are a fickle lot. The same youth of 30 years ago were the ones that installed the current theocracy. By the way, you weren't, perhaps, on the sidelines cheering our previous leader when he declared Iran part of the axis of evil were you? You know, part of the bomb, bomb Iran crowd?

_____

You're confused. The job of the President of the Unites States of America isn't to foment an uprising, or be a cheerleader for protestors over an election, especially in Iran? RIGHT NOW?

You, and the rest of you Obama haters/Right wing nuts/mental midgets just don't get it, do you?

The President has done a great job, with a very difficult situation.

This is an Iranian issue, not an American issue. The Iranian protestors wanted us to know what was going on, hence the signs in english. They weren't asking for help, or some sort of lip service from the west.

That's been the problem with U.S. diplomacy for the last 8 years, no nuance, no REAL understanding of the issues, just an uncaged elephant steppin all over the world, lookin for nuts. amd screamin,"there aint no rest for the wicked"...

Pea brained pachyderms...

So Obama should TELL THEM what kind of nation they should be?

And you seriously believe that they would listen to him, and do what he says.... WHY?!?!?
