New York City's EMS needs to be competitive in salary as the department faces staffing struggles, FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore says.

In an interview on "The Point with Marcia Kramer," Bonsignore said she supports pay parity between EMS and firefighters, adding that the department's current primary concern is staffing ambulances.

"Nationally, we see that there is a shortage of EMS," she said. "Sixty percent of the nation is complaining that there's just not enough people coming to the EMS profession, and New York City is not exempt."

Bonsignore says part of the problem is that a lot of people who join EMS end up leaving within their first five years because of the low pay.

"I think we're the most recognized, greatest fire department in the world," she said, "and I think we would attract the highest level of talent if they could afford to come here, work here and live here."

While pay is important in attracting more people to the job, Bonsignore also said she thinks the department can convince people to join through example and storytelling, and by stressing that their mission is all about saving lives.

"I think there are a lot of people out there that are heroes and just don't know it yet," she said, "so we have to make sure that the department and that the profession at large is accessible to the younger generation, that they understand what it means and that they find their inner hero, and they come and save lives for a living."

Bonsignore also talked about the FDNY marking 25 years since 9/11, the unstable East Side high rise that sparked evacuations earlier this summer, and more.

Click here to watch the full episode, which also includes Kramer's interview with Ellen Hart, owner of the popular Theater District restaurant Ellen's Stardust Diner.

Tropical Storm Moke is expected to deliver heavy rainfall and gusty winds to parts of Hawaii on Sunday, as it skirts just south of the island chain, still reeling from the serious damage caused by Hurricane Lala last weekend.

Moke packed maximum sustained winds of 40 mph Sunday evening and was moving west at 15 mph, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center. Moke's center was forecast to pass south of the Big Island on Sunday, and then well south of the smaller Hawaiian islands early next week. It would likely start to weaken Sunday, forecasters said.

Tropical storm warnings were in place through Sunday night for waters surrounding Hawaii, although no coastal warnings or watches were in effect. A flash flood watch was issued for parts of the Big Island, as forecasters warned of excessive rainfall through Monday afternoon.

Flooding and mudslides on the Big Island could be life-threatening, especially in steep terrain and over areas recently affected by Lala, said CBS News meteorologist Nikki Nolan.

There were also concerns about potential flooding on the island of Maui.

"Recent impacts from Tropical Storm Lala mean that even light to moderate rain and wind could trigger flooding, debris, downed trees, roadway issues and power outages," Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen said in a statement. "County departments have been preparing for Tropical Storm Moke, and we're asking our community to do the same."

The forecasted movement of Tropical Storm Moke as it passes south of Hawaii. "We have submitted our request for federal assistance to bring additional resources to Hawaii."

The islands are paying a price from an El Niño climate pattern, via warming waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Warm ocean waters are the essential fuel for tropical cyclone development, which makes this El Niño phase perfect conditions for an increased hurricane season in the region.

Because it reduces vertical wind shear, meaning changes in the direction of winds at higher levels of the atmosphere, an El Niño climate pattern allows for tropical systems that develop in the region to avoid getting "blown over" and falling apart.

Washington — Neel Kashkari, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, said Sunday that the tariff fight with Canada could extend U.S. inflation, should the tense trade dynamic that came to a head in recent days between the historically allied countries continue.

"The longer there's back and forth on the trade front, just like the longer there's back and forth in the conflict of Iran, the imprint and inflation end up being extended and delayed," Kashkari said on "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan."

The U.S. on Saturday began imposing 50% tariffs on Canadian products after negotiators failed to reach an agreement to resolve the standoff over trade between the key partner countries. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Saturday that no new planned talks with the Canadians were on the table.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney promised new retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., with details to come this week ahead of their planned implementation on Sept. 8. The tariffs are expected to target steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp, paper and electronics.

Mr. Trump has had a tense relationship with Canada over trade, NATO, a dispute over a Detroit-area bridge, and his threats to make Canada the U.S.' 51st state.

Kashkari noted that Canada is "an important trading partner for America." The two countries sold $880 billion worth of goods and services to one another in 2025, with Canada coming in behind Mexico as the U.S.' second-largest trading partner.

Kashkari outlined the U.S.' current economic picture, pointing to five years of elevated inflation that he said was largely driven by supply shocks.

"One of those supply shocks is the trade and tariff conflicts," Kashkari said.

The Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank president said along with issues like the war with Iran, which he called "a big driver of what's happening on inflation" due to energy's broad impact on the U.S. economy, the trade dynamic is "another factor to pay close attention to."

"And so to the extent that we can get to a new normal, a level of whatever the trade dynamic is going to be, once we can get to that steady state, then businesses can adjust, and the inflationary impact can fade into the background," Kashkari said.

One tick bite can make you violently allergic to meat: beef, pork, veal, lamb, venison, rabbit, everything but seafood and poultry.

Adriana Stimola lives on Martha's Vineyard, where Alpha-gal is an epidemic. "About five hours after having a hamburger on the beach at midnight, I wake up and I have a rash, I have some swelling in my hands, and I'm in gastric distress," she said.

Her children got it, too, and her husband. "He had a burger, and at midnight woke up and shot out of bed," she recalled. "Pretty quickly he was like, 'My mouth feels weird. My lips are swelling.' And I just said, 'Get in the effing car!'"

Alpha-gal reactions can include anaphylactic shock, where your airways close up. Some people become allergic to dairy products, too, or even to the aroma of meat. Some react to things that contain animal products, like marshmallows, Doritos, and medicine capsules.

Stimola says it has even affected going to a friend's house for dinner: "I feel that really deeply," she said. And in fact, it's very interesting that it has risen to national prominence because of places like the Hamptons and Martha's Vineyard, when in fact people in the South and Midwest have been suffering this all along. Southerners are like, 'Well, you know, if you don't have a dog with ticks on it, what kind of dog is that?'"

So, what has changed? "It's awareness now," said Telford.

Alpha-gal is short for galactose-α-1,3-galactose, a sugar molecule carried by the lone star tick.

Tick carriers

Any discussion of tick diseases eventually brings up deer. We have a tick problem because we have a deer problem. "The white-tailed deer are the primary breeding ground for lone star ticks, as well as deer ticks," said Aubrey Stimola Ryan, who treats tick-bite patients at Martha's Vineyard Hospital, and in her own clinic. "And we have a very large sort of out-of-control deer population here.

"One deer can feed 1,500 ticks per season," Ryan said. "And one tick can lay 2,000 eggs, one female tick! So, that's 3 million ticks that are coming off of one deer."

Sam Telford said, "We don't want to eradicate deer. We just want to bring them down to a level that is something that the colonists had."

According to Telford, the public's aversion to killing deer may be changing: "I've worked on trying to get communities to reduce their deer for 40 years now, and Lyme disease wasn't enough. But now this new syndrome, Alpha-gal syndrome, is stimulating communities to say, 'Enough is enough. Reducing deer will reduce ticks, and so, let's go there.'"

Now, not every tick bite gives you a disease; and not everyone with Alpha-gal develops the meat allergy. And even if you do, it may not be a life sentence. "Over time, it seems like it can get better," said Telford. "You can slowly introduce meat products back into your diet over time, if you don't get bitten by ticks again."

Aubrey Stimola-Ryan has advice along those lines: "Spraying your skin, spraying your clothes. When you come inside, take your clothes off and throw them in the dryer for 10 minutes on high. And check yourself for ticks twice a day."

In particular, Tom Mather suggests checking wherever tight clothing might stop a moving tick: "Your waistband is a good spot, certain cracks and crevices of your groin. Women, their bra straps will stop ticks as well."

As for Adriana Stimola, life goes on — without meat, and with a philosophical outlook: "We've done a lot of damage raising, especially, cattle for our consumption. So, I think maybe it will make us talk about the way we eat meat, how much we eat meat, the way that we raise it, where do we fit in the greater sort of food chain, and reminding us that we are part of a larger system."

For more info:

Thomas Mather, director, Center for Vector-Borne Disease, University of Rhode Island

TickEncounter Reserouce Center, University of Rhode Island

Sam Telford III, professor of Infectious Disease and Global Health, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts University

The Tick Center at Martha's Vineyard Medical, Oak Bluffs, Mass.

TickWiseMV (Instagram)

Tick Free Martha's Vineyard

Red Cat Kitchen, Martha's Vineyard

Story produced by David Rothman.
The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products early Saturday after last-ditch negotiations failed to resolve the latest strain in already tense relations between the historic allies. Canada's leader said it will retaliate beginning Sept. 8.

In a call with reporters late Friday, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada had declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms that had been agreed to earlier this week. He told Fox News on Saturday that there are "no new planned talks with the Canadians."

"We're moving forward with measures that respond to Canadian retaliation," Greer said, adding: "After a year of that retaliation, we've said enough, and so we've taken countermeasures. Our interest is in protecting American workers and protecting American supply chains. We've been offering to bring the Canadians along on that path, really to cut the tariffs on them, on steel, on tariff autos, even lumber, things that are sensitive for them, and they've always had the best deal, and they still would have an even better deal, but they didn't want that."

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Saturday that "in the coming days, we will release the details of these new tariff measures, which will come into force the Tuesday after Labor Day." The dollar-for-dollar retaliation would target steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and electronics.

President Trump hit back early Sunday with a Truth Social post saying Canada wanted "the benefits of being a State, without being one."

"They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs," Mr. Trump wrote.

Carney disclosed that Canada had been willing to drop remaining retaliatory tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos if the U.S. substantially lowered its own, and to encourage provinces to restore U.S. alcohol sales.

But he said Washington's final demands went too far, saying, "They asked too much and offered too little," Carney said.

"The new U.S. tariffs are designed to hurt us and divide us. They're a miscalculation. They're a miscalculation because Canadians will always take care of each other. We know we're stronger together," he said.

Canada sought concessions on Trump tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and lumber that the U.S. was unwilling to provide, a senior Trump administration official told reporters. Carney blamed Washington for the breakdown, saying "last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal." He said he had suspended negotiations and directed Canada's negotiating team to return to Ottawa.

President Trump's import taxes will hit about 5% of what Canada ships to the U.S. every year, including products ranging from hockey sticks to tongue depressors.

But the political impact will likely be even bigger than the economic fallout. Canada's threat to retaliate against the new tariffs with levies of its own will aggravate a trade fight between countries that sold each other $880 billion worth of goods and services last year.

The tariffs were initially supposed to kick in at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. But Mr. Trump extended the deadline for three days to allow talks to continue, but the two countries still could not reach an agreement in time.

Earlier this week, Carney had said that "substantial progress has been made, although there is important work still to be done."

The breakdown in negotiations marked a sharp reversal from two days earlier, when officials from the two countries sounded as if they were headed toward a compromise.

Ahead of Saturday, the Trump administration had imposed a 10% tariff on goods from Canada, the U.S.'s second-largest trading partner after Mexico. However, most Canadian imports are exempt because they comply with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a trade deal signed during Mr. Trump's first term.

Mr. Trump has had a tense relationship with Canada over trade, NATO, a dispute over a Detroit-area bridge, and his threats to make Canada the U.S.' 51st state.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who leads Canada's most populous province, backed Carney's response, saying the prime minister had his "full support" for retaliation "tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar" and that "everything needs to be on the table."

The two countries had good reasons to find a compromise.

Nearly 72% of Canada's goods exports last year went to the U.S. The Trump administration might be wary of imposing new tariffs — paid by U.S. importers who try to pass along the cost to consumers via higher prices — before the November midterm elections. American voters are already frustrated with the high cost of living which has been aggravated by the war in Iran.

A man was shot and killed in Brooklyn on Friday night in what police sources say may have been a road rage incident.

Police say they got a 911 call around 10 p.m. reporting a shooting on Crescent Street near Stanley Avenue in East New York. When officers arrived, they say they found a man who had been shot in the chest.

Paramedics rushed the gunshot victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as 27-year-old Gurdeep Singh, of Queens.

Surveillance video obtained by CBS News New York shows what appears to be two people fighting in the street, then a flash of light from apparent gunshots. One person then falls to the ground, and the other gets in a car and drives off.

Anthony Santos works nearby and says he heard about six gunshots. He said he thought it was fireworks until he saw an ambulance.

"Absolutely, like, shocked. Like, I'm afraid," he said.

Police spent hours searching the neighborhood for evidence late Friday night into Saturday morning.

No arrests have been made so far.

The investigation is ongoing.

The shooting happened in the 75th police precinct, where there have been at least 28 shooting incidents so far this year. That includes a shooting on Wednesday that killed a 17-year-old inside a restaurant on New Lots Avenue. Police are still searching for two individuals in connection to that incident.

"I gotta be careful now around here with the shootings and stuff," Santos said

At this time last year, police had recorded 27 shootings in the 75th precinct.

A free memorial concert was held Saturday night at the College of Staten Island to pay tribute to those killed on 9/11.

Organizers say they wanted to remember the victims through song as we approach 25 years since the attacks.

Staten Islanders performed songs from every decade to honor other Staten Islanders who were killed or died as a result of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Samantha Chiodo sang her mom's favorite song to remember her firefighter father.

"My father was a New York City firefighter for 25 years. He was from Engine 226, State Street, Brooklyn, and he was the best man I've ever known in my life," Chiodo said. "Taken from us due to 9/11-related illness three years ago, and I miss him every day."

She wears his engine number on a necklace.

"His number follows me everywhere, 226, so that's why I'm wearing it today, too," she said. "It's actually my sister's badge number now. She's a New York City firefighter, as well."

Dennis McKeon, who organized the concert, says he wanted to bring the community together and take their minds off the pain. His organization works with 9/11 family members.

"Where people could hear songs that maybe their loved ones liked," he said. "We reached out to family members to say, did your family have a favorite song?"

His son James McKeon was among the performers.

"If they they're sitting there, you know, remembering in solemness or if they're clapping along, singing," he said.

The College of Staten Island has its own memorial bearing the names of alumni who died in the attacks. The college plans on holding its own 9/11 memorial service on Sept. 10.
