FIFA World Cup fans will have something extra to go wild about during the final this summer.

For the first time ever, the World Cup final will host a Super Bowl-style halftime show, with megawatt headliners Madonna, Shakira and BTS.

As the most popular sports tournament on the planet continues to expand its reach, especially in the U.S. market, the choice of artists is no coincidence. They're all huge artists in their own right, but for FIFA, this is their chance to truly resonate with fans.

Global stars for the global game

Shakira is widely considered as the most successful Latin artist of all time. She joined Madonna, one of the most iconic artists in music history. And there's BTS, the South Korean superstar K-pop band who have achieved unprecedented, record-breaking success.

All three of them appeal to a global market and will now perform at the final of a competition watched by more than a billion soccer-loving fans.

Coldplay's Chris Martin was joined by Elmo and a few other characters from Sesame Street to make the big announcement online. FIFA says the halftime show will also feature Muppets from Sesame Street, along with Kermit and Miss Piggy, among others.

This particular World Cup, being held in the U.S, Mexico and Canada - is the largest ever with 48 teams taking place - so FIFA's aim is to use the halftime show as a vehicle to grow to a younger, diverse and wider audience.

Halftime shows are unusual in soccer. Occasionally, there are pre-match concerts.

Show is also a fundraiser

The show will benefit the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. The fund aims to raise $100 million and is dedicated to helping kids access education and soccer. FIFA says $1 from every ticket sold throughout the tournament will be donated to the fund.

"Performing at the FIFA World Cup final in support of the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund is deeply meaningful to me. Without education, children are denied opportunity before they even have a chance. Every child deserves access to quality learning — because education expands possibilities and creates lasting change," Madonna said.

"I've spent my life doing two things — making songs and building schools. At the FIFA World Cup, those two paths come together. Standing alongside Madonna and BTS, I'll be performing 'Dai Dai,' the song I created for this FIFA World Cup and for the kids around the world we will reach with the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. My hope is that on the world's biggest stage, the importance of investing in children's education steals the show," said Shakira.

"Music is the universal language of hope and harmony, and we're honored to celebrate that power at the World Cup by connecting with millions of viewers around the world in support of children's education," said BTS.

"Madonna, Shakira and BTS are global icons whose music transcends borders and generations, and we are proud to welcome them to the first-ever FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show curated by Chris Martin of Coldplay," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

15 minutes or more?

There are still more details to come, including a press conference in Lower Manhattan later Thursday with Shakira and others from the Global Citizen committee taking part. But for the first time ever, the men's World Cup final will have a halftime show. And FIFA is going all out for it.

One problem is that soccer halftime is 15 minutes, so FIFA now has to decide whether or not to make it longer, which could be a detriment to players accustomed to that 15-minute break.

The final is set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The inspector general's office later found she was using a student OMNY card.

She said she found the card on the street, according to the complaint.

NYC Transit prohibited her from working on any MTA property. They said they are also reinforcing oversight between the company she worked for and the subway's security management team.

MTA workers forbidden from accepting cash for access

The subways have been cashless since April 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"All cash was removed from the service booths and MTA personnel were not permitted to engage in any cash transactions, including reduced fare transactions or providing change," the complaint stated.

Both agents and security guards are also forbidden from "nickeling," meaning they can't exchange cash with customers for access to the subway.

Chinese President Xi Jinping had stern words for President Trump on Taiwan as they met in Beijing on Thursday, warning of potential "clashes and even conflicts" if the issue isn't "handled properly," according to Chinese state media.

During their summit, the two leaders are aiming to stabilize their trading relationship after last year's trade war. They're also grappling with uncertainty over the United States' war with Iran. But China made it clear that Taiwan is a top priority in the U.S.-China relationship.

The closed-door session lasted roughly two hours and 15 minutes. The White House characterized the meeting as "good." At a state banquet later, Mr. Trump said he was inviting Xi and his wife for a reciprocal visit at the White House on Sept. 24.

Mr. Trump told Fox News' Sean Hannity that Xi told him he would like to help open the Strait of Hormuz, and claimed that Xi said he's not going to give Iran any military equipment, which Mr. Trump called a "big statement."

The White House said that several American business leaders joined for a portion of the larger bilateral meeting, with Chinese media indicating Mr. Trump introduced each one individually. The White House shared photos of the bilateral meeting on social media, where the CEOs can be seen standing behind Mr. Trump and U.S. officials.

"The two sides discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation between countries, including expanding market access for American businesses into China and increasing Chinese investment," a White House official said in a readout of the meeting.

Several U.S. executives were invited to travel to China. Figures like Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook were among those who were in attendance at Thursday's welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People, standing alongside Trump administration officials in the U.S. delegation. China is a key market for many of their companies, with Nvidia seeking to sell more advanced chips to China, even as some worry about giving China access to such advanced technology.

A U.S. official shares a photo of the CEOs in front of the Great Hall of the People.

After the meeting, Mr. Trump and Xi visited Beijing's historic Temple of Heaven and then headed to a state banquet.

Reporters asked Mr. Trump how the talks went and he said they were "great," adding that China is a beautiful, incredible place.

The "Taiwan question"

Mr. Trump and Xi both ignored questions about whether they discussed Taiwan. But one regional source said Taiwan did come up in their conversation.

But a readout posted on X by Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Xi stressed to Mr. Trump that "the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations. If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy."

The post said Xi also told Mr. Trump that "'Taiwan independence' and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. Safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the biggest common denominator between China and the U.S."

The White House didn't mention Taiwan in its description of the meeting.

The People's Republic of China has long said it intends to reintegrate with Taiwan, and it has not ruled out using force to take over what it views as a breakaway province. The U.S. has provided billions of dollars in military support to Taiwan and said it opposes any unilateral change to the status quo, but the U.S. also has a longstanding policy of declining to say whether it would come to Taiwan's defense in a war with China.

Meanwhile, some in Taiwan — a democracy that produces the vast majority of the world's most advanced semiconductors — worry that the United States' support for the island may be up for negotiation as Mr. Trump seeks agreements with China, experts say.

Xi, Trump compliment each other at state banquet

At the state banquet, both Xi and Mr. Trump complimented each other. Mr. Trump said they had "extremely positive and productive conversations," while Xi said "the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand."

Both leaders emphasized the importance of the relationship between the U.S. and China, with Xi highlighting it as "the most important" bilateral relationship in the world.

Xi and Mr. Trump harked back to the history of the two countries' relations, with Mr. Trump pointing toward Chinese influence in American food and culture and Xi reminding the room of Henry Kissinger's visit to China under Richard Nixon.

At the end of the state banquet, Xi played clips from a decade's worth of his various meetings with Mr. Trump, sources in the room told CBS News. The U.S. president watched the montage and loved it, one of them said. As part of the music during dinner, Chinese musicians played an instrumental version of "YMCA" for him.

Economic ties

Both sides struck a positive note on trade.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported that Xi told Mr. Trump that, as Xinhua put it, "China-U.S. economic ties are mutually beneficial and win-win in nature."

The agency quoted Xi as saying, "Yesterday, our economic and trade teams produced generally balanced and positive outcomes. This is good news for the people of the two countries and the world. Facts have shown time and again that trade wars have no winner."

"Where disagreements and frictions exist, equal-footed consultation is the only right choice," he said, according to Xinhua, adding that Xi called on "the two sides to jointly sustain the good momentum that they have worked hard to create."

The White House said, "The two sides discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation between our two countries, including expanding market access for American businesses into China and increasing Chinese investment into our industries. Leaders from many of the United States' largest companies joined a portion of the meeting."

Iran

On Iran, the White House said the two leaders "agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy. President Xi also made clear China's opposition to the militarization of the Strait and any effort to charge a toll for its use, and he expressed interest in purchasing more American oil to reduce China's dependence on the Strait in the future. Both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon."

Mr. Trump said he didn't expect the war with Iran to come up as much as trade. Mr. Trump is seeking a deal with Iran, but talks appear to be stalled as both countries vie for control over the Strait of Hormuz. Mr. Trump said this week an early April truce that paused direct U.S.-Iran fighting is on "life support."

Speaking to CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Thursday morning, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that China has a bigger interest in reopening the strait than the U.S. does.

"China gets about a third of its energy needs from the Gulf," Bessent said. "So, a reopening of the Strait benefits China. Unfortunately, they've been buying — they were the largest consumer of Iranian oil. They were buying about 90% of it. Iranian oil represented about 10% of their energy that they had took in."

China imports large amounts of oil from the Middle East and is the world's largest purchaser of Iranian oil, meaning China is both sensitive to the war's dire impacts on the global oil trade and key to supporting Iran's economy.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Fox News that he expects Iran to come up in this week's talks with Chinese officials, and that "we've made clear to them that any support for Iran would obviously be detrimental for our relationship." He argued that China has an interest in resolving the Iran conflict's impacts on oil shipments, and "we hope to convince them to play a more active role."

Some experts argue the U.S.' focus on the Middle East — including the munitions it has used in Iran — could make it more difficult to prepare for a potential confrontation with China.

"We're going to have a fantastic future together"

The day began with Mr. Trump and Xi shaking hands outside Beijing's Great Hall of the People on Thursday morning local time, or late Wednesday night ET. The two leaders chatted during an opening ceremony that featured a brass band, marching military units and cheering children waving American and Chinese flags. Inside the meeting room, Mr. Trump and Xi offered positive words on the U.S.-China relationship before reporters were ushered out and talks between the two countries began.

President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping attend a welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People on May 14, 2026, in Beijing, China.

It's unclear whether the U.S. and China are on track to strike a more comprehensive trade deal, but experts believe neither side is looking for a repeat of last year's trade war, and both sides have said they are looking for stability.

The Trump administration has sought to preserve U.S. access to rare earths and to allow American companies to export food and other goods to the Chinese market — topics that could come up in this week's Trump-Xi meetings. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has also floated the idea of a U.S.-China "Board of Trade" to coordinate those deals.

"We'll be talking with President Xi about a lot of different things.
Health officials around the world are monitoring a deadly hantavirus outbreak linked to a Dutch-flagged cruise ship. So far, there are at least 11 confirmed or suspected cases connected to the ship, including three deaths.

Hantaviruses are a family of rare viruses usually passed to humans through contact with contaminated rodent waste or saliva. They often present with symptoms of pulmonary and respiratory distress that can be severe, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The strain identified in the outbreak on the M/V Hondius cruise ship is called the Andes virus, which is the only known hantavirus strain to spread person to person. Transmission occurs through prolonged close contact, health officials say.

Investigations, contact tracing efforts and isolation protocols were underway in a number of countries to which citizens returned after leaving the cruise on a stop at the end of April, as well as for people who were on a flight with a confirmed case, the World Health Organization said.

The other cruise ship passengers disembarked from the ship after it docked in Spain's Canary Islands. They were carefully evacuated by nationality and placed on repatriation flights.

New cases have emerged in the days since passengers returned to their home countries, although health officials around the world continued to assure the public that risks to them remained low.

Here's what to know about the confirmed or suspected cases so far.

Dutch couple believed to be first cases

Oceanwide Expeditions said a 70-year-old Dutch man died aboard the ship on April 11. He developed symptoms less than a week earlier, on April 6, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said May 7.

Because his symptoms were similar to those of other respiratory diseases, hantavirus was not suspected at the time of his death, and no samples were taken, Tedros said. However, he is now believed to be the first hantavirus case on the ship.

The man's 69-year-old wife left the cruise ship on April 24 when it docked in Saint Helena, a remote British island territory in the Atlantic Ocean where a number of other passengers also disembarked. She died two days later in South Africa, after her condition "deteriorated during a flight to Johannesburg," the WHO said. Her blood later tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus.

Before boarding the cruise ship on April 1, the Dutch couple had taken a bird-watching trip through Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, visiting sites where the species of rat known to carry the Andes virus was present, according to the WHO.

Contact tracing procedures were in place for others who were on the wife's flight from Saint Helena to Johannesburg, Tedros said. He also told reporters that the WHO was working with countries of which the others who disembarked in Saint Helena are citizens.

American "tested mildly PCR positive"

Seventeen Americans and one British dual citizen who lives in the U.S. arrived on a repatriation flight early Monday, May 11.

Fifteen of the passengers were taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center's National Quarantine Unit for continued monitoring, while one — who had "tested mildly PCR positive for the Andes virus" on the ship — was taken to the center's biocontainment unit.

"With these PCR tests ... there's sort of a range in where they can fall. And so for that reason, we want to just want to make sure there's further testing to evaluate that," Brendan Jackson, acting director of the CDC's Division of High Consequence Pathogens and Pathology, said on May 11.

On May 13, that person was medically cleared to move to the National Quarantine Unit, Nebraska Medicine said.

Dr. Stephen Kornfeld also confirmed to CBS News on May 13 that he tested negative and moved from the biocontainment unit to the quarantine unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The oncologist from Bend, Oregon, had been traveling on the MV Hondius cruise ship and helped care for fellow passengers who became sick, The Associated Press reported.

Those in the quarantine unit were so far asymptomatic, Michael Wadman, the medical director of the quarantine unit, said on May 13.

Another two passengers, one of whom had some symptoms, were flown to Atlanta for further care and assessment, according to Jackson. The person with symptoms later tested negative for the hantavirus, he said.

Spanish passenger tests positive

A Spanish passenger who was on the ship has tested positive for the virus, Spain's health ministry announced on May 12. The person was in quarantine in a military hospital in Madrid — the same hospital where 13 other Spanish nationals who were on the ship were quarantined, The Associated Press reported. Those 13 have all tested negative for the hantavirus.

French woman tests positive

A 65-year-old French woman who traveled on the cruise ship has tested positive for hantavirus and remained hospitalized in intensive care on May 12, infectious disease specialist Xavier Lescure said during a French Health Ministry briefing. She had developed "the most severe form" of the cardiopulmonary illness that can be associated with the virus and was receiving oxygen through an artificial lung, according to Lescure.

France's prime minister previously said that one citizen began showing symptoms of hantavirus during a repatriation flight. All five passengers on the flight "were immediately placed in strict isolation until further notice," and will undergo testing, he said on social media.

British passenger hospitalized in South Africa

On April 24, an adult man from the United Kingdom presented to the cruise ship's doctor with respiratory symptoms and other signs of pneumonia, according to the WHO.

His symptoms had worsened by April 26, so the passenger was medically evacuated a day later from the island of Ascension to South Africa, where he remained hospitalized in an intensive care unit. Tests confirmed that the man had contracted the Andes virus, South African health officials and the WHO said.

Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's director of epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention, said May 7 that the man's health was improving after officials previously described him as being critically ill.

German woman died aboard the ship

Another passenger, from Germany, died aboard the Hondius on May 2, officials said. According to the WHO, the woman initially developed a fever on April 28 and eventually presented with symptoms of pneumonia. Her body was still on the ship, the cruise operator said.

2 crew members treated in the Netherlands

Officials said three people were medically evacuated from the ship on May 6 and May 7, and flown to the Netherlands to receive care.

Testing confirmed two of them — the ship's doctor and a ship guide — had contracted hantavirus. The Dutch national and British national had shown symptoms of the virus prior to their evacuation, and both later tested positive. Oceanwide Expeditions initially described their conditions as serious, but Van Kerkhove said the WHO had learned both were in stable condition as of May 7. They were each placed in isolation.

The third person, a German passenger closely associated with the German woman who died on May 2, was evacuated as a suspected case, but later tested negative for Andes virus, according to the cruise operator and the WHO.

Swiss man tested positive

A Swiss man who disembarked the cruise ship in Saint Helena tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus, according to Swiss health officials and the WHO. The man developed symptoms and underwent testing in Zurich, where he is receiving care, officials said May 6.

The man's wife, who was with him on the cruise, had not shown any symptoms, but was self-isolating as a precaution, the Swiss public health agency said.

Suspected case on Tristan da Cunha

A British national on Tristan da Cunha, a remote group of islands part of the British Overseas Territory that includes Saint Helena, is another suspected case, U.K. officials said May 8. The person had disembarked from the ship, the U.K. Health Security Agency said.

The ship stopped at Tristan da Cunha between April 13 and 16, Oceanwide Expeditions said. During this time, one crew member disembarked and six passengers joined the cruise, the company said.

International monitoring efforts

The WHO is in touch with officials in at least 12 countries who are monitoring citizens that returned home after disembarking the ship in Saint Helena, Tedros said. Those countries include Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Singapore, Sweden Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

In the U.S., the health agencies of five states have said they are monitoring people who returned earlier from the ship: two each in Georgia and Texas, one each in Arizona and Virginia, and three in California.

A fourth California resident was being monitored after taking an international flight with a cruise passenger later confirmed to have hantavirus, and a fifth was being monitored by the CDC and British health officials in the Pitcairn Islands, a British territory in the South Pacific. That person, another passenger who may have been exposed on the cruise ship, disembarked the M/V Hondius before the outbreak came to light and returned to California, before leaving the country again on another international trip, California health officials said.

Additionally, the New Jersey Department of Health said it is monitoring two residents who were not on the ship but may have been exposed to a confirmed case during a flight.

None of the individuals were showing symptoms, the health departments said.

A WHO official confirmed to CBS News on May 8 that a KLM airline flight attendant, who had come into contact with cruise passengers and was hospitalized in the Netherlands for monitoring, had tested negative for hantavirus.

French Health Minister Stephanie Rist said that 26 people in France who may have been exposed to the virus tested negative on May 14 but would continue to be isolated in a hospital and tested three times a week. Rist said prior transmission to others could be "ruled out at this stage," and health officials would no longer share public updates on the isolated group unless someone tests positive.

France's Ministry of Health previously said it had identified 22 people who potentially came in contact with the Dutch woman who died in South Africa. That included eight French nationals who took the same flight she did from Saint Helena to Johannesburg, and 14 others who took a different flight that the Dutch woman briefly boarded before she was removed from the plane because of her symptoms.

Face-to-face meetings between the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Long Island Rail Road unions that are poised to strike ended Wednesday at 2 p.m. with proposals exchanged but no deal.

More talks are scheduled Thursday.

The clock is ticking for both sides to agree by the Saturday morning deadline.

The MTA and the unions met in Manhattan. The remaining sticking point remains wages in the fourth year of a contract.

The MTA says it has offered up to 4.5% with work rule concessions. The unions are pushing for 5%, as recommended by a federal panel. The 3,500 workers include electricians, locomotive engineers, signal inspectors, machinists and ticket clerks.

MTA officials say agreeing to those demands would require higher fares system-wide, including subways, buses and Metro North.

The railroad's locomotive engineers are among the highest paid in the nation.

Union representatives told CBS News New York's Carolyn Gusoff they are not looking for "games and gimmicks." They said they want wages that will keep up with inflation.

"They've come up. They're taking money out of our right pocket and put it in our left pocket," said Karl Bishoff of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen.

"We have been without a raise for three years now," said Duane O'Connor of BLET. "We don't want to disrupt the island and the city."

MTA officials said they have a lump sum offer on the table. An MTA official expressed hope that a deal was reachable.

The last LIRR strike was in 1994, and lasted two days.

Contingency plans for strike

Gov. Kathy Hochul said Wednesday she believes a deal can still be made.

"There is only one way to be avoided. Both sides must continue to negotiate in good faith," Hochul said.

Commuters are starting to think about an alternative plan if no deal is reached.

Ronkonkoma will be one of six stations with shuttle buses to subway stations in Queens.

Commuters are thinking through their Plan B.

"I probably have to commute by car, have my wife drop me off, or come up with a situation. I don't even know," said David Sainphor.

"It is an inconvenience for us riders, but at the same time, I support that they need to get fair wages," said another man.

"I guess I would have to take the bus, but that's a whole complicated thing," a woman said.

"There is an impact on everybody. If there is a strike, my customers won't be going to work," business owner Michael Gould said.

Buses can't fully replace the nation's largest commuter railroad.

"Give yourself time, and if you can stay home and work from home, do it," said Charlton D'Souza of Passengers United.

AAA spokesperson Rob Sinclair is warning of regional gridlock if service shuts down.

"You've got extra buses on the road and extra vehicles on the roads," he said. "It might take three or four hours to get where you need to go, especially if you're going into Manhattan."

Mets planning shuttle buses in event of strike

There will be additional shuttles taking Mets and Yankees fans to Citi Field if the LIRR is shut down due to a strike.

The teams are set to face off this weekend in the Subway Series.

Mets officials said more shuttles will be added to existing Long Island routes, and a new line will depart from the Manhasset LIRR Station.

Shuttle tickets are $8.99 per ticket for round-trip service or $25 for a family of four for the new route. The other routes are $8 round trip or $22 for a family of four.

Fans will automatically receive refunds if there is no strike and the shuttle service isn't needed.

Other routes on Long Island depart from Walt Whitman Shops and the Roosevelt Field Mall. There are also two routes from New Jersey and one in the Bronx.

For generations, the heroes of children's literature often looked the same, leaving millions of young readers searching for a reflection that wasn't there. This Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a new wave of authors is rewriting the script.

A few years ago, when Ran Wei of Maplewood, New Jersey, went searching for children's books to read to her daughter, Lily, she found almost no characters who looked like her family.

"I think we had come up with Cho Chang from Harry Potter, and I remember Claudia from the Babysitters Club," Wei said. "For me, especially for my children who are multicultural, it's just really important to see representation out there."

That's when Wei created Boba Bear — a bilingual book series about a cub of mixed heritage, honoring her own children's multiracial identity.

"When I'm reading with them, I want them to feel the immense sense of pride, belonging, connection," she said.

Filling a long-standing void

Wei is part of a surging movement of Asian American authors who are closing a gap in children's publishing.

According to the Cooperative Children's Book Center, books featuring significant AAPI characters or written by AAPI authors and illustrators jumped from just 2% to 22% over the last 30 years.

That shift is clearly visible at the Queens Public Library, where Director of Technical Services Hong Yao says their AAPI juvenile book collection has doubled in the last six years to more than 17,000 items.

"Publishers finally realized that we do have a community because our circulation is very high," Yao said. "They can tell that the material related to Asians, to AAPI authors, issues — people like it."

The library continues to evolve alongside the borough's changing demographics, recently adding several new Bengali-language titles, including The Love Match by author Priyanka Taslim.

"You can be a man character"

The young adult romance novel, set in Paterson, New Jersey, follows a love triangle between three Bangladeshi American teens.

"I wanted to show the students I teach as well — you can be a main character, you can be the heart of a story like this, and you deserve happy endings just like everybody else," Taslim said.

For Wei's 4-year-old daughter, Lily, the connection is already real.

"I like Boba Bear because she's just like me," Lily said.

It's exactly the kind of moment that keeps Baker writing. She's already working on her next book to make sure her daughters always feel like they belong.

At least one shot was fired in Port Washington during a police pursuit Wednesday, police sources tell CBS News New York.

The chase ended with a crash near the Americana Manhasset shopping center.

Fortunately, there were no injuries.

What police say happened

The incident started just after noon on Main Street in Port Washington when a Port Washington police officer tried to pull a driver over. That person then took off, police said. Why they were being pulled over was not revealed.

The man was taken into custody following the crash near the shopping center. Port Washington Police say the crime scene stretched across multiple scenes along Searington Road and Port Washington Boulevard in Port Washington and Manhasset.

"The individual fled the scene and caused multiple vehicle accidents, which culminated into the accident we see behind here at Americana mall. That individual responsible for this accident, multiple accidents, was apprehended, and is in custody," Nassau County Police Chief of Department Christopher Ferro said.

Stevie Hill, who lives in Port Washington, said she grabbed her pets and ran into her home.

"I heard three gunshots," Hill said. "My car was hit."

Ashley Eliyahu said she was leaving the mall when police took down the suspect and put him in cuffs.

"It sounded like a shot. It was very loud and then people started scrambling," Eliyahu said. "There was like five people behind him, like pointing a gun at him."

No information was released about the driver, or what charges they will face.

Police said there was no threat to the public.

Schreiber High School and Weber Middle School were briefly placed on lockout during the incident.

Area residents stunned by "absolute chaos"

Officers near two vehicles that crashed following a pursuit that ended in Manhasset on May 13, 2026.

Just like a pop, it wasn't even that loud."

"We just saw the cops running, and my aunt said she heard, like, a loud crash," Ria Khaira said. "It's scary. Especially in Americana, you wouldn't expect something like this to happen."

"It's quite scary to see this. I see a crime scene, search unit, ambulances, and really wonder what's going on," added Jackie Soleimani. "It's a beautiful area. We're always very peaceful. Nice people who live here, and then you see this. It's kind of alarming."

"It was absolutely insane, the amount of cops that they had. They had a chopper in the air, circling. It was really something," Serjai said.

Rosmarin, originally from Monroe, New York, described his time so far at the University of Nebraska Medical Center's National Quarantine Unit.

"I know I'm in the best care possible, and I'm just trying to stay positive," he told CBS News New York's Mary Calvi in an interview Wednesday.

There have been 11 confirmed or suspected cases of hantavirus so far, including three deaths, since the outbreak began.

Seventeen Americans and one British dual citizen were flown to the U.S. Monday. Of the 18, one tested "mildly PCR positive" for the Andes strain of the hantavirus, and another began showing symptoms, U.S. health officials said Sunday.

Sixteen of the Americans, including the one who tested positive, were taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Fifteen of those, including Rosmarin, were placed in single-occupancy rooms at the medical center's National Quarantine Unit. The person who tested positive for the Andes strain was initially placed in the center's biocontainment unit, but was medically cleared Wednesday to be moved to the quarantine unit.

"I feel well," Rosmarin said. "I have no symptoms, and I'm just ready to cope with the next 40 days left here in quarantine."

Meanwhile, the passenger who showed symptoms, along with the person they were traveling with, were flown to Atlanta for treatment and monitoring at a biocontainment facility at Emory University Hospital.

What the day-to-day is like in quarantine

In quarantine, Rosmarin said he gets a daily temperature check and regular blood work done. There's also a stationary bike inside his room for exercise. He also has Wi-Fi and a bathroom. He said he has a window, but he keeps it closed because "there are people outside, so I don't need them looking in my room."

Michael Wadman, the medical director of National Quarantine Unit, told reporters that there is no intermingling between passengers and no visitors, aside from medical staff.

Rosmarin described his room as "much more spacious than the ship."

"We don't really have much going on during the day...For the most part, we just get to kind of, you know, relax and be comfortable in here," he added.

Rosmarin indicated, though, that he hasn't been given regular updates from the outside world as to the status of his fellow passengers.

"I'm not really sure of anything that goes on outside of this room," he said.

"It was a really scary time"

Rosmarin said the trip was "unbelievable" until the final 24 to 48 hours before they were initially slated to disembark. That is when the Hondius passengers learned there had been a confirmed case of hantavirus, he said.

"Everything just went downhill," Rosmarin explained. "...It was that week following before we could get off the ship and repatriated by the United States, that was a really scary time, specifically for me," he said.

Rosmarin said it was frightening that no government wanted the ship to disembark at their ports due to the virus. Spain finally agreed to dock the ship in the Canary Islands. There were nearly 150 people from 15 countries aboard the ship when the evacuations began Sunday. The evacuees were placed on repatriation flights to their respective countries, with the U.S. passengers arriving in Omaha, Nebraska, on Monday. A skeleton crew remained behind to sail the Dutch-flagged Hondius to Holland.

Once-in-a-lifetime trip

Rosmarin described the trip as an expedition journey, and said the passengers weren't on a typical cruise. Because it was a smaller group, all the passengers knew each other.

He said some of their destinations included South Georgia Island, where they saw the largest king penguin colony in the world, and Tristan da Cunha.

"We got to swim in the middle of the ocean, not far from the equator, where the ocean was over 15,000 feet deep," he said. "Overall, I mean it was a really, really unbelievable experience."
