Samsung's bendable cell phone, will it become a reality?

(CBS) - Remember those snap bracelets that are flat one minute, but roll up around your wrist like a watch? Wouldn't it be awesome to have a cell phone that did the same?

According to International Business Times, there's a flexible mobile phone out there aptly called the Samsung Galaxy Skin.

It features an AMOLED display, which bends "around a cylinder with a 1-inch diameter," says the Telegraph. It comes equipped with 1Gb of RAM, 1.2GHz processor and an eight megapixel camera. And, it's be brighter than other cell phone's typical screens, low-energy, unbreakable... Who cares?! It wraps around your wrist!

Developed by professors Haeseong Jee and Jye Yeon You, the phone uses a plastic polyimide substrate instead of glass, reports the Telegraph. It can even "survive a blow from a hammer," says sources. Its key material is graphene, which is the strongest in the world.

A prototype of the flexible display was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show. CNET described it as a "malleable screen you can actually bend in a wave or an arc ... [with] an impressive WVGA (800x480 pixel) resolution that you can curve."

But wait... Unfortunately, reports from International Business Times and the Telegraph that the Skin is rumored to release in the second quarter of 2012 are not exactly accurate. (It was wishful thinking on our part, too.) Darn it! In a brief statement to UK magazine T3, Samsung explained that the Skin is not in their plans. "It is a project that has been carried out by design students and is just a concept product. Samsung was not involved in the project," a Samsung rep told T3. "The students used the name Galaxy Skin and the Samsung logo in their concept to make it look more like a commercial product."

So there you have it... A practically unbreakable, pretty bendable phone? Sounds like a mobile device with superpowers to us. And as it turns out, it's not going to become a reality just yet. Even still, our fingers are crossed it's on the way one day. Imagine the space you'd save in your purse or pocket!
