Watch: "Downton Abbey" season 4 first full trailer debuts

The first season 4 full-length "Downton Abbey" trailer has made its debut, set to the sounds of The Joy Formidable.

It begins with Maggie Smith's Violet Crawley telling Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), "You have a straightforward choice. You must choose either death or life."

This comes after Mary lost her husband, Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens), who at the end of last season died in a car accident. Although we don't get too much dialogue, the trailer moves fast, offering us a few hints of what's to come, as well as glimpses of the new characters, including jazz singer Jack Ross, played by Gary Carr.

"Downton Abbey"received 12 Emmy nominations in July, including acting nods for Smith, Dockery and Hugh Bonneville.

The series returns in the U.S. on Jan. 5.
