Rogelio Belmonte, 28, was charged with capital murder in the dragging death of a Dallas woman. Dallas County Jail

(CBS/AP/KTVT) DALLAS - A capital murder charge has been filed against a 28-year-old man who allegedly attempted to steal an elderly woman's purse at a North Texas Wal-Mart parking lot, in a confrontation that led to her death.

Police say 76-year-old Sabra Leavy died Saturday afternoon, three days after she was dragged approximately 40 yards and then run over by a truck as her purse was being stolen on March 9.

On Saturday, police arrested Rogelio Belmonte of Denton, Texas for the crime, according to CBS affiliate KTVT. He is being held in the Dallas County jail, charged with capital murder.

Leavy was able to talk after the incident Wednesday and told investigators the man driving the truck grabbed her purse and took off while her arm was still caught in the strap.

A video surveillance camera captured the fatal incident.

Investigators later found the pickup involved in the attack and arrested Belmonte when he returned to the truck.

Belmonte is being held on $50,000 bond.
