The Healing Bear

It's called the "healing bear." Its ribbons and messages chronicle tragedies in America, reports Correspondent Rick Salinger of CBS station KCNC-TV in Denver.

Its journey of sorrow began when it was sent to Oklahoma City for victims of the Murrow Federal Building bombing.

It was then sent to a high school in Montoursville, Pa., that was home to several students killed when TWA Flight 800 blew up off Long Island.

But another tragedy was to follow. And another message: "From Montoursville Area Senior High School, we are passing this bear to you to continue the job. God bless and we are with you."

Since April, the bear has been on display at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., where 13 people were killed by two teen gunmen in the nation's worst-ever school shooting.

And now it's being sent to Wedgwood Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, where 7 people, including 3 teen-agers were shot and killed last week by gunman Larry Gene Ashbrook.

"It's a symbol that has comforted us, let us know the country was thinking of us," said a Littleton woman. "We hope it will be the same for them, to help them in their healing process."

Though the bear is meant to bring comfort, it's chilling to think that it may have to be sent somewhere else after Fort Worth.

A note from Columbine principal Frank DeAngelis accompanies the bear to Texas: "We hope the violence will end and you will not have to send this bear to another community."
