Student charged after shot fired in dispute at Kent State

KENT, Ohio - Kent State University officials say a freshman shot himself in the hand during a dispute Wednesday night that prompted a campus lockdown.

He was taken into custody at the hospital where he sought care.

Campus Police Chief John Peach says the man fired while arguing with two female students, and no one else was hurt. He says the motive wasn't clear.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the shooter was arguing with other students outside a campus building when the suspect took the gun out of his pocket.

Peach say the gunman, 24-year-old Quavaugntay Tyler of Cleveland, was in jail Thursday on a concealed weapon charge.

Police say Tyler had been the subject of a campus theft investigation and was on probation in a separate theft case. He told police he had a gun because he'd been the victim of an armed robbery.

Classes and campus activities have resumed and are back to normal.
