Steve Carell appears as "Despicable Me 2" character Gru on "Ellen"

Steve Carell stopped by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Thursday to promote "Despicable Me 2" -- and did the whole spot as his villain-turned-father character, Gru.

Sporting Gru's black coat, scarf, bald head and long nose, Carell sat down with host Ellen DeGeneres and stayed in character the entire time.

DeGeneres played along, even trying to figure out his accent and ask where the character came from.

"I'm from Albuquerque, New Mexico," Carell, as Gru, replied. "Don't push this topic."

The animated character's stint in the real world also included his signature dance moves, done through the aisle in the show's studio audience.

"Despicable Me 2" arrives in theaters on July 3.
