Soccer Moms First To Be Booted

Last night on "The Amazing Race," the self-described soccer moms were the first to be "booted."

Gina Diggins and Sylvia Pitts arrived at the Pit Stop in Mexico just moments after identical twins Derek and Drew Riker. The soccer moms from South Carolina talked to The Early Show's Julie Chen about what went wrong.

"It's a whole lot of things. I mean, honestly I don't know if there's anything we could have done different. It's a minute here and a minute there," said Sylvia. "I don't know if there's anything specific. I mean, I can pick it out of other people."

Gina and Sylvia are two 30-something stay-at-home moms from Hilton Head Island, S.C., who are constantly on the go. Whether it's changing diapers, helping with homework or cheering on a little one at a soccer game, the pair have been taking care of their families and haven't had much time to focus on themselves.

While both moms attended the University of South Carolina, they met and became friends at a baby shower. Instead of pursuing careers outside of their home, they both decided to become at-home moms. Their children range in ages from 16 months to 9 years old.

There was an emotional part of Wednesday night's show when the two were in a convenience store in Mexico picking up supplies. Sylvia saw a little girl the same age as her daughter and it really got to her. Sylvia said, however, it wasn't as much because she missed her daughter.

"It was the difference between my daughter's life, and this little girl's life," Sylvia said. "My daughter's life will be so different than this little girl for only one reason, she's an American. I mean, that's going to make a huge difference. And I think that really hit me in the face, when you're in a different country and you know the difference."

The "Team Soccer Mom" said The Amazing Race gave them the chance to experience an adventure away from their families. But perhaps their easy-going Southern charm and sensibility put them at a disadvantage.

Unlike the races of past TV seasons, it did not take a few weeks for a sense of cometitiveness to kick in.

"I think it was intense from the beginning with everybody. But everyone had seen two races," said Gina. The team said the fact that they had not traveled widely put them at a disadvantage as well.

In the first episode, it was tense from the get-go when everyone was trying to get to the airport and get the flight out of Miami to Mexico. Heather and Eve, the so-called "Legally Blonde" team, went begging for money in the airport. "Team Soccer Mom" called them on it.

When asked about the incident, Gina and Sylvia said they thought the behavior was shady since, when people give donations, they assume they are giving it to a needy person, they said. But they agreed it wasn't against the rules.

"It was kind of a weird thing, I think, for some people. But I will say for the record, I do enjoy those girls. And you know what? They're smart," said Sylvia.
