"Rock of Ages": What critics are saying

(CBS News) "Rock of Ages," the Broadway musical-turned-film directed by Adam Shankman, hits theaters today and critics seem to agree that Tom Cruise steals the show. But they seem to disagree on whether this is a good thing or a bad thing.

The rock n' roll romance film, which stars Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and a horde of other stars and features a soundtrack of classic songs from Bon Jovi, Journey and Joan Jett, scored a 42 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here's what some of the reviewers had to say:

"With every hiar carefully in place, every note tweaked and every moment cut from the same block of plastic-wrapped Hollywood cheese, it's content to keep toes tapping, when it should be bringing the arena to its feet," wrote Washington Post critic Ann Hornaday.

"Don't stop believing. Just avoid clichéd musicals that try to capture the anarchic spirit of rock with trite commercial re-treads," wrote USA Today reviewer Claudia Puig.

"Cruise's duet with Ackerman of Foreigner's 'I Want to Know What Love Is" opens the film up. From there Cruise never comes back to earth. He's incredible. You simply can't take your eyes off him," wrote Peter Paras for E! online.

"Cruise once again steals the show, but this time drives it straight off a cliff. Without Cruise, 'Rock of Ages' would have been merely a bland, bright-eyed version of the winking Broadway show about L.A.'s sleazy Sunset Strip during the 1980s," wrote Newsday critic Rafer Guzman.
