"Real World" Star Delivers Baby on Side of Road
CBS NEW YORK There are some things in life that you just can't plan for - and for "Real World: New Orleans'" alum Matt Smith delivering his second child on the side of the highway is one of them.
Smith assisted in delivering Stella St. Clare Smith by the side of the San Tan freeway just outside Tempe, Ariz. after wife Candyce's labor progressed more quickly than anticipated on Thursday, Oct. 21, People reports.
Despite the unexpected and memorable delivery, Smith's daughter, weighing in at 7 lbs., 11 oz., was born without complication and both mom and Stella are doing just fine.
Smith recalls that at 10 p.m. Candyce's contractions were about two hours apart but by midnight it became clear that their daughter's arrival was imminent. A calm, but nervous Smith was on the phone with 911 and was relieved when he heard the baby crying.
So what did they end up naming the baby?
The nurses suggested that Santana for the San Tran freeway she was born on, but the couple decided to go with Stella instead.
"We'd rather have a freeway named after her than name her after a freeway," Smith told People. "I felt very blessed and was thanking God that we made it."
Newborn Stella joins big sister Norah Grace, 2, at home.
