Grandma takes a bite out of crime

PHILADELPHIA -- A 91-year-old woman has story to tell - lucky for her - after she surprised a couple of burglars in her Philadelphia home.

Part of Audrey Washington's story is this: "Asked the Lord to keep me for another day"... "Somebody put their hand up to my face and I bit the finger," she told CBS Philly.

It happened Wednesday afternoon at Washington's home of 50 years.

"I put the key in the lock and opened the door and zoom something went over my head. They grabbed both my hands that had rings on, took my rings and I don't know what else happened after that," said the retired teacher.

Police told CBS Philly the two thieves got away with two rings, a suitcase and a TV - but after Washington surprised them they dropped everything except one diamond ring while running away.

Washington says she was returning home from her daily visits to a senior center when she encountered the crooks. She's left with scratches and bruises.

"I'm sore first, I'm shocked that it happened to me because I never thought this would happen to me and mad at the same time," Washington told the station.

Police Lt. John Walker said the suspects are "two African American males, 18-21 years of age, one wearing a white T-shirt, the other wearing a black shirt, both between 5'8"-5'10".

Audrey Washington says she feels pity for her attackers who are now wanted for serious offenses after getting away with just a ring.

As she put it: "They're ruining their own lives more so than mine because mine will heal up and I'll probably get another ring."
