Palin Insists Obama Rented Out Stadium For Election Night Party

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

(ASHEVILLE, N.C.) - For the third time on Sunday, Sarah Palin claimed that the Obama campaign has rented out a stadium for an election night celebration. The charge came as part of her attempt to portray the Democratic nominee as arrogant and presumptuous.

"Or the stadium that's he's already rented out for what he would hope to be his victory party that he's planned," Palin said at a rally here.

The charge that Obama has rented out a stadium for the event drew boos from the crowd of over 7,000.

Only problem? It's not true.

Obama plans to hold his election night celebration at Hutchinson Field, at the southern end of Grant Park in Chicago.

Palin's traveling press secretary Tracey Schmitt did not respond to an email request for clarifcation and another Palin spokesperson said she would have to go back and look at the remark.

DNC spokesperson Damien LaVera jumped all over Palin's charge.

"Doggone it, apparently this team of mavericks thinks making things up is easier then defending John McCain's promise of four more years of the Bush economy or his record of voting with President Bush 90 percent of the time," LaVera said.

Palin's accusation might have been taken as a minor slip of the tongue had she said it only once, but the Alaska governor echoed the charge at two other rallies on Sunday.

"Now you get the feeling that the Obama campaign just thinks that this election process is merely a formality," Palin said after repeating the stadium line in Asheville.

"But they've overlooked the minor detail here of the confidence and the trust that they must earn before you would vote for them."
