Pair charged with breaking in to Indonesian Consulate in New York

NEW YORK — Two people are in custody in connection with a burglary at the Indonesian Consulate in New York City.

Police say they stole alcohol, electronics, a suitcase full of clothing and a minivan they used as their getaway car Monday.

The suspects allegedly entered the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia on East 68th Street in Manhattan through an unlocked door at around 1 a.m. Monday, according to police, who released surveillance images from the burglary.

When Consulate General Benny Siahaan arrived to work Monday morning, he noticed the consulate’s tan 2004 Honda Odyssey minivan, used for diplomatic business, wasn’t parked in its usual spot, he told CBS New York.

“We asked our staff, nobody took it, nobody used it,” Siahaan said. “So then we were sure somebody took it.”

Police say the suspects were arrested Tuesday after returning to a Bronx hotel they had burglarized Sunday. Police say Rivera tried to bribe police with some of the stolen items during the arrest.

Authorities say 18-year-old David Rivera and a 16-year-old girl face charges of burglary, grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

It wasn’t immediately clear if they had lawyers who could comment on the charges.
