Katie Holmes returns to Broadway in "Dead Accounts"

Katie Holmes made her return to Broadway on Monday, when the play "Dead Accounts" began in previews.

Previews were originally scheduled to begin on Nov. 3, but were pushed back due to recovery from superstorm Sandy, Playbill notes.

According to People, Holmes, 33, earned applause on multiple occasions, including one scene when a telephone she was using broke and she carried on, fixing the prop and incorporating the mishap into the scene.

A speech her character delivers about Wall Street greed was also reportedly well-received by the audience.

"Dead Accounts," written by "Smash" creator Theresa Rybeck, stars Norbert Leo Butz as a wealthy man who returns home to his family in Cincinnati. Holmes plays his skeptical sister.

Critics' take on the play - and Holmes' performance - will be available after the show officially opens on Nov. 29.
