Illinois man gets a month in jail for cursing at a judge

URBANA, Ill. - A central Illinois man who cursed at a judge in court has been sentenced to a month in jail for direct criminal contempt.

Twenty-five-year-old Jack Cardwell of Rantoul has to serve the sentence no matter the outcome of his domestic battery case.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports Judge John Kennedy presided over Cardwell's Friday arraignment in the domestic case. After it ended, Cardwell uttered an expletive and when Cardwell was called back to the bench to address it, he cursed at the judge.

Cardwell has apologized to Kennedy saying he knows he was "out of line" during an emotional time.

Cardwell could have faced up to six months in for disrupting the court proceedings.
