Ill. man arrested after allegedly attacking best friend with chainsaw, report says

CBS

(CBS) CHICAGO - A 55-year-old man has been accused of attacking his longtime friend and neighbor with a chainsaw, according to CBS Chicago.

The suspect was reportedly arrested Wednesday night, with charges pending Thursday morning.

Preston Smith, the alleged victim, underwent surgery to repair a gash to his left hand.

Smith and his friend of 30 years had reportedly been drinking in the backyard when they started arguing at 1 a.m.

The mother of the victim, Mildred Smith, told the station Preston got into his car to leave but his friend wouldn't let him.

The man allegedly came out with a chainsaw and started attacking Preston, who was sitting in the car with the window down.

"They were supposed to be best of friends," Mildred Smith told the station.

Preston allegedly stepped out of the car to talk to his friend but got slashed with the chainsaw instead. The fingers on the victim's hands were allegedly badly cut but not completely severed.

Mildred Smith said the fight got out of hand because of the alcohol involved.
