(CBS) HOUSTON - A 4-year-old boy is in critical condition after shooting himself with his father's gun in a north Houston apartment, CBS affiliate KHOU reports.

Jose Luis Nunez was at home with his parents and baby sister early Tuesday morning when he reportedly picked up a gun his father left on a nightstand around 1a.m., the station says.

The child's parents were in another room when they heard a gunshot and rushed in to find the young boy with a bullet wound to his head. Nunez's 2-year-old sister was near him at the time of the shooting, but was unharmed, KHOU reports.

The boy was rushed to Children's Memorial Hospital for treatment. Doctors successfully removed the bullet, but said he was still unresponsive.

The boy's father was placed in handcuffs at the scene for questioning, police said. It is unclear if charges will be filed.
