Mystery of the giant metal die solved in Idaho

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho -- A giant metal container apparently washed up on the shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene over the weekend and the mystery of its origin is becoming clear, reports CBS affiliate KREM-TV.

“It was about 6-foot, square and steel,” Mark Sales told KREM-TV.

“As my Dad and I were leaving the beach ... there were a bunch of people braving the rain and snapping photos with it too,” Sales told KREM-TV. “Something different in Coeur d’Alene for sure.”

The container ended up looking like a die because of the white dots placed on it by a local resident.

The man behind the decoration has been revealed, according to a tweet from KREM-TV reporter Taylor Viydo.

Chris Gridley, who owns a sign shop, used a machine and some vinyl stickers to fix up what his mother-in-law called was an eyesore on the shore.

One witness told KREM-TV that it appears as though the die was removed by officials on Monday afternoon.

Also posted to Twitter is time-lapse security footage showing the die drifting away to another spot at Lake Coeur d’Alene.
