Report: Lead Baltimore investigator in Freddie Gray case charged with assault
BALTIMORE -- A Baltimore police detective who became the lead investigator in the Freddie Gray case has been charged with assault, reports the Baltimore Sun.
Veteran homicide detective Dawnyell Taylor, 46, was charged Friday with two counts of second-degree assault, the paper reports.
Taylor told the paper the incident was related to “an ongoing family dispute that I’m sure will be resolved.” A complainant is reportedly listed as Tonia Taylor.
Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith told the Sun that Taylor’s police powers have been suspended.
Freddie Gray’s April 2015 death, which occurred after he suffered injuries during his arrest and transport in a Baltimore police van, sparked weeks of unrest in the city. Six police officers were charged, but none of the charges resulted in convictions.
