Barry Bonds Prepping for Federal Trial, So Donation to Journalists Raises Concerns
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) Here's a bit of inside baseball.
Barry Bonds, baseball's all-time homerun king (like it or not) is preparing for trial on federal charges that he lied to a grand jury about steroid use - which is precisely why his foundation's recent $20,000 donation to a black journalists group is raising eyebrows among some members.
The National Association of Black Journalists announced the donation last week from the Barry Bonds Family Foundation. Association member Kenneth Cooper says the former San Francisco Giants slugger is a controversial figure, and journalists and their organizations should maintain their distance.
NABJ President Kathy Times says the money will be used for an annual award promoting entrepreneurial spirit. She said the board discussed Bonds' legal situation and decided to accept the contribution.
