Barack Obama, The Economic Stimulus, And The GOP: Responding To Farrell

I'm not sure I agree with my colleague John A. Farrell's take on whether the Republicans made a mistake by opposing President Obama's stimulus bill in the U.S. House:

If the package doesn't pull the economy out of the current canyon it's in, and/or if it leads to hyperinflation, it may look like brilliance in hindsight.

I do agree the Republicans seem like a flock of sheep without a shepherd at the moment. The old guard that's leading Congress right now needs some young, fresh replacements. But the one thing that has always held the GOP together has been the call for lower taxes. And Mr. Obama's right-headed yet profligate spending can't possibly lead to lower taxes in the future, any more than former President Bush's wrong-headed profligacy will.
