Baltimore unveils criminal justice camp for youngsters

BALTIMORE - Baltimore city officials are introducing a six-week criminal justice camp to provide 30 youngsters the ability to go behind the scenes and see what it takes to keep the city safe, reports CBS Baltimore.

"All too often, and not just in Baltimore City, but in urban cities across America, the exposure by young people to the criminal justice system is when they're already a part of it," said Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby.

The program is scheduled to begin in July, reports the station, and the CEO of Baltimore City Schools is excited about it.

"It brings a caring adult into the youngster's life, it offers mentoring opportunities. Then it begins to set a stage for aspirations for the future, our children want to do great things, they want to make contributions to our community," said Dr. Gregory Thornton.

"The idea is to expose them to the profession so they can start to think long term and not think about instant gratification and think about college and think about what it takes to become an attorney," Baltimore prosecutor Mosby said.

Isiah Clark is one student who hopes to attend.

"I just like to see how things are done and how they solve investigations," said Clark.

In all, 10 schools are involved, according to CBS Baltimore.
