First holiday shopping report shows disappointing sales

The first indication of how much Americans spent on holiday shopping shows lower-than-expected figures. According to MasterCard SpendingPulse, retail shopping was up 2.3 percent, less than the 3.9 percent the National Retail Federation projected. Now, stores are racing to clear inventory.
