North Texas faces severe weather threat Wednesday with hail and strong winds

All threats are possible in North Texas Wednesday, with large hail and strong winds being the primary threats. The tornado threat is low. A First Alert Weather Day is in effect on Wednesday in North Texas due to the severe storm chances.

The day started out quiet in North Texas as storms developed to the west. Wind gusts reached up to 65 mph in western counties.

Temperatures on Wednesday will stay in the 70s as clouds and rain keep North Texas cool.

The rain tapers off early overnight into Thursday, where there will be a brief break with some sunshine, and highs in the mid-80s.

By Friday, thunderstorms are likely, primarily during the morning and afternoon. Once again, CBS News Texas First Alert meteorologists will be tracking the threat for strong to severe thunderstorms during this timeframe, which is why they have issued another First Alert Weather Day for Friday.

This weekend looks to feature lots of dry time, with highs in the upper 70s, and just isolated shower chances.

Tornado watch vs tornado warning

A tornado watch is when tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area, according to the National Weather Service. When there's a tornado watch, the NWS advises to review emergency plans, take inventory of supplies and check safe rooms.

A tornado warning is when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. This means there is imminent danger to life and property, according to the NWS. When a tornado warning has been issued, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, avoid windows and protect yourself from flying debris.
