ELLIS COUNTY – An innocent victim died and two people were hospitalized Thursday after Dallas police were involved in a shooting following a chase and two-vehicle crash on I-35E in Ellis County, authorities said.

It happened Thursday morning on I-35E southbound at Red Oak Road, in northern Ellis County.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the chase began in Dallas County when police identified a suspect wanted for capital murder. Officers tried to get the suspect to pull their vehicle over; however, the suspect fled.

Dallas police chased the suspect into Ellis County, where it ended with the suspect vehicle crashing into an uninvolved SUV. One person in the SUV was killed in the crash and another was severely injured, DPS said.

The suspect then exited his disabled vehicle with a firearm in his hand, DPS said, and moved away from the officers who had been in pursuit.

Dallas police officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect. Police provided life-saving medical care to the suspect.

The suspect and the injured occupant of the second vehicle were transported to a Dallas area hospital, DPS said.

Ellis County Sheriff, Red Oak police, Dallas police and DPS were seen at the site of the incident. No officers were injured.

The crash caused miles of traffic backup, as the southbound 35E service road and most of the main lanes were shut down for much of the day. CBS News Texas reporter Robbie Owens said traffic was at a standstill around 12:40 p.m. and it took about an hour and a half to move two miles.

The Texas Department of Public Safety will investigate the officer-involved shooting. The Red Oak Police Department will investigate the traffic accident.
