Steve Chaggaris is CBS News’ political director, leading the network’s political and campaign coverage and providing on-air reporting and analysis across the network’s broadcast and digital platforms.
Prior to becoming political director, Chaggaris served as CBS News’ senior political editor, where he built and ran the network’s Political Unit that covered the historic 2016 presidential election. Chaggaris also served as executive Washington editor for CBSNews.com from 2012-2014.
Chaggaris began his CBS News career in 1999 as an associate producer in the Political Unit and also worked as an embedded campaign reporter covering John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign for the network. Chaggaris’s other CBS News assignments also included covering the September 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon, covering Congress from 2001-2003 and again in 2005, and serving as director of political coverage for the 2008 campaign, before temporarily leaving CBS News in 2010.
Chaggaris also worked as VP of Cable News for local news startup TBD.com from 2010-2011 and as an executive producer at Yahoo News in 2012.
Before joining CBS News, Chaggaris worked at C-SPAN from 1995-1999; he began his journalism career at WMUR-TV in Manchester, N.H. in 1994.
Chaggaris, a native of Lynn, Mass., is a 1994 graduate of Ithaca College, and currently lives in Washington, D.C.
